Jack Abell notched their 4th straight win on Friday night over a very tough Mobil One Angels team at Ort Field by a final score of 2-1.
Abell manufactured both runs. Colton Sivic led of the first inning with a single, stole second and third and scored on a RBI groundout by Josh Van Meter to take a 1-0 lead. The team generated another run in the fourth. Jack Hawkins lead off with a single, and was safe at second a fielder choice error on a grounder hit by Van Meter. Hawkins was later thrown out attempting to steal third, but Van Meter eventually moved to third after a walk to Dylan Shockey. When Shockey stole second, Van Meter was caught in a rundown but eventually made it home safely to give Abell a 2-0 lead. That would be enough runs for the Lavale team, as the Angels defense played strong; they threw out two runners trying to steal home as well as a runner trying to steal third.
Van Meter pitched 5 strong innings, allowing no runs. Hawkins pitched the sixth inning to get the save. Good pitching and good defense once again was the theme for Abell. Several good defensive plays by Abell, including a clutch catch by first baseman Brook Knierem sealed the victory.
Also, special thanks to Coaches Troy Van Meter, Dave Hawkins, Tim Sivic, and Mike Shockey for getting the field ready after some pretty poor weather. Their efforts allowed us to get the game in.
The Jack Abell plays again next Friday at Frostburg, followed up by a game on Saturday afternoon (5-17)
