Despite good pitching and strong defense, Jack Abell Baseball lost to Frostburgs Farrady Post in extra innings by a 3-2 score on a chilly night in Frostburg.
After Farrady scored two runs in the bottom of the third, Abell scored one in the fourth. Tyler Hotchkiss lined a one out double and came around to score on a hit by Travis Yacuboski. Abell tied the game in the fifth when Nate Condor stroked a one out double off the fence and came around to score on a Colton Sivic double.
The Abell defense was strong all night and a big play in the fifth inning was a good example. With one on and one out for Farrady, the clean up hitter stroked a double to left field. Yacuboski hit the cutoff man(Condor) who threw a strike to the plate to gun down the runner. When the batter tried to stretch his double to a triple, Trenton Swan (catcher) ran at the runner, eventually throwing to Nate covering third, who threw to Broadway at second and back to Hotchkiss at third for the tag and the third out of the inning. This double play went 7-6-2-6-4-5 for those of you scoring at home.
In the bottom of the sixth, Caleb Sivic had the bases loaded, with the winning run at third for Farrady and a 3-1 count to the batter, before firing two strikes to get the batter, then three straight strikes to the next batter to get out of a tough jam. Despite all of this, Abell's efforts fell short as the big hitter for Farrady Post hit a home run in the 7th inning to win the game.
Although they didn't hit well, Abell played good defense. Nate Condor pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up two runs. Caleb Sivic only gave up one run in 2 innings. Everyone on the Abell defense had at least an assist on a put out. Chad Broadway made a nice play on defense, as well as fly balls caught by Josh Riggs and Logan O'Brien. Trenton Swan threw out a runner trying to steal second.
Abell hopes to rebound against Perma Seal on Monday night.
