Down Goes Abell

Jack Abell lost their first game of the season on Wednesday night to JR's of Frostburg by a score of 6-4. Frostburg capitalized on some 2 out magic in the third inning to score all 6 of their runs.

Abell broke out on top with a run in the first as Colton Sivic reached first on an error, advanced to second, stole third and came home on a wild pitch. Abell scored two more in the third as Sivic and Jack Hawkins both singled and scored; a long RBI flyout by Dylan Shockey drove in the third run of the game for Abell.

But JR's went on top in the bottom of the third. The bases were loaded after a couple of walks and hit batsmen with one out. A ground ball back to the pitcher allowed Abell to get a force out at home for the second out. But a two out see eye grounder up the middle scored two runs to make it 3-2. After a walk to load the bases, another two out single that would have scored two was misplayed (two different errors on the play) allowed four runs to score and put JR's up 6-3. Abell manufactured a run in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-4, but could not rally for needed runs.

Abell had several long fly balls that were tracked nicely by JR's center fielder to minimize the number of potential base runners. Abell plays again Friday night.

Abell's Late Run Helps Notch Win #6

Jack Abell won it's 6th straight game on Thursday scoring in their last at bat against the very tough Giants from Cresaptown at Webber Field. Chad Broadway had a two out RBI double to put Abell ahead in a game that they won 6-3.

Abell got on the board in the first inning as Colton Sivic started the game with a single, went to second on a walk by Jack Hawkins and scored on Dylan Shockey's RBI groundout. The Giants however put two runs up in the bottom of the first to take the lead. Abell fought back with two in the third, highlighted by a Van Meter RBI double and a successful double steal, where Broadway stole home.

Once again, Josh Van Meter was tough on the hill, entering the game in the third with runners on the corners and one out. The Giants laid down a nice bunt and when the out was made at first, the runner from third broke for home and scored, tying the game at 3. Van Meter shut down the potent Giants offense after that and waited for the 6th inning heroics from the bottom of the Abell lineup.

With the score tied at 3 in the top of the sixth, Abell had two out and no one one. Brooke Knieriem drew a two out walk, followed by a two out walk to Trenton Swan. Broadway, with two on and two out, stroked a double to drive in the go ahead run. Sivic followed him and delivered his third hit of the game, driving in two more.

Abell once again had several nice defensive plays, including a double play as well as a catch of a sinking line drive by Swan in the outfield.

Abell Grabs Win #5

Jack Abell secured their 5th win in a row with a 9-4 victory over the Red Sox at Ort field on Saturday.

Dispite some rare defensive lapses, Abell was able to battle back from an early deficit to get the win. After trailing 1-0 in the second inning, Abell grabbed the lead thanks to a 3 run home run by Brook Kniereim. Nate Condor led off the inning with a sharp single and was moved to second on a walk. Nate was eventually thrown out at the plate, but Knieriem came up with two on and two out and delivered a drive over the left field fence to give the team a lead.

Abell broke the game open in the fourth with 5 more runs. Colton Civic and Josh Van Meter had big hits during the inning to give Jack Abell a large lead. After a few defensive lapses late, Abell hung on to secure it's 5th straight victory. Van Meter and Jack Hawkins did not give up an earned run in the victory.

Abell Hustles to Victory

Jack Abell notched their 4th straight win on Friday night over a very tough Mobil One Angels team at Ort Field by a final score of 2-1.

Abell manufactured both runs. Colton Sivic led of the first inning with a single, stole second and third and scored on a RBI groundout by Josh Van Meter to take a 1-0 lead. The team generated another run in the fourth. Jack Hawkins lead off with a single, and was safe at second a fielder choice error on a grounder hit by Van Meter. Hawkins was later thrown out attempting to steal third, but Van Meter eventually moved to third after a walk to Dylan Shockey. When Shockey stole second, Van Meter was caught in a rundown but eventually made it home safely to give Abell a 2-0 lead. That would be enough runs for the Lavale team, as the Angels defense played strong; they threw out two runners trying to steal home as well as a runner trying to steal third.

Van Meter pitched 5 strong innings, allowing no runs. Hawkins pitched the sixth inning to get the save. Good pitching and good defense once again was the theme for Abell. Several good defensive plays by Abell, including a clutch catch by first baseman Brook Knierem sealed the victory.

Also, special thanks to Coaches Troy Van Meter, Dave Hawkins, Tim Sivic, and Mike Shockey for getting the field ready after some pretty poor weather. Their efforts allowed us to get the game in.

The Jack Abell plays again next Friday at Frostburg, followed up by a game on Saturday afternoon (5-17)

Abell's Bats Come Alive

The bats came alive for Jack Abell on Tuesday night as they beat Personal Best at Ort Field, 15-8.

A couple of defensive miscues allowed Personal Best to take an early 3-0 lead. However, Abell fought back with four runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. Everyone for Abell put the ball in play with the bat. Colton Sivic, Dylan Shockey, Josh Van Meter and Trenton Swan all had multiple hit games for Abell.

Jack Hawkins pitched four strong innings, with good bullpen help from Chad Broadway and Van Meter. There were several good catches in the outfield by Swan and O'Brien.

Abell plays again this Friday at 6 pm
